Most people don’t pay enough attention to writing product descriptions. This is sometimes obvious. Many SEO experts suggest focusing on category pages first instead of product pages.

These SEO experts also recommend creating multi-level category pages, which is a good approach. Here’s an example: If you’re working on an e-commerce camera website, the best approach would be creating categories and subcategories like:

  • Cameras > Camera Types (DSLR Cameras) > Resolution & Sensor Size (Full-Frame Cameras) > Use Case (Cameras for Beginners) > Brand & Model (Canon Cameras)

But why isn’t it a good idea to rely only on this approach? Don’t worry—I’m going to share a simple method of writing a product description for SEO in a way that not only drives traffic but also turns visitors into customers. Adding a video can make a big difference—according to Wyzowl Research, 82% of people buy a product or service after watching a video.

Reasons to Write Product Description

Some SEO experts think that on-page SEO is done after working on category pages. But many products are well-known by their names, like the “Canon EOS R6.” This means if we optimize a product page, we might start getting some traffic.

Some entire niches need product descriptions, such as perfume, electronics, etc. You can get some of your website traffic by ranking your products on search engines.

Similarly, some niches don’t need any product description, like Digital Art & Prints, Logos & Branding Assets, T-shirt Designs (Without Text), and more.

The best solution is to check the keyword volume to decide whether to spend your time on the category page or the product page. When there’s high volume for any product compared to the category you want to create, I suggest you focus on that product first instead of making and optimizing a new category page that has no keyword volume.

9 Simple Steps: How to Write a Product Description for SEO

Instead of just explaining how to write a product description for SEO, why don’t we actually create one together? This makes it more practical, relatable, and easier to understand.

Let’s use a ‘Perfumes’ example since these steps work for any type of product description.

1. Product Selection:

Let’s say our online shop offers 120 well-known product selling brands in Pakistan, with 15 products for each brand. It’s hard to figure out which products people are searching for the most. So we need to do some basic keyword research and make a list of the top 20 perfume brands.

Now it’s time to give it a proper format.

7. SEO Optimization & CTA Addition

But the question is: how do we do SEO for product descriptions? Now, we have to naturally incorporate these keywords into the description without over-optimizing. For example, here are the refined keywords.

8. Meta Data

Don’t think these steps are too long or a waste of time. I used to write 10 product descriptions in 8 hours, including a 1-hour break, and I also uploaded them to the website. If you’re wondering how long one product description takes, it’s about 20 minutes max.
